Iraq market attack leaves 40 dead

world news

| |

Around 40 people have been killed in an attack on a crowded market south of Baghdad. There are conflicting accounts of exactly what happened in Mahmudiya but it seems an explosion was followed by a rampage in which armed men fired at traders, passers-by and local residents. It happened on the anniversary of the coup d’etat in 1968 that brought Saddam Hussein’s Sunni-dominated Baath party to power.
