At least two Israeli soldiers have been killed after Palestinian fighters attacked an Israeli army post near the Gaza Strip. Three militants were also shot dead. The armed wing of Hamas said it helped carry out the raid.

The rocket and gun attack also involved the People’s Resistance Committees, a coalition of militant groups. Militants tunnelled under the border at the Kerem Shalom crossing before attacking with guns and rocket-propelled grenades. The Israeli army says two soldiers were killed while another is missing. Four soldiers were earlier taken to hospital. The People’s Resistance Committees said the operation was in response to Israel’s killing of their leader Jamal Abu Samhadana earlier this month.
