Gunmen storm Palestinian Television offices

world news

| |

Suspected Hamas gunmen have attacked the offices of Palestinian Television in the Gaza Strip, accusing the broadcaster of favouring the rival Fatah movement of President Mahmoud Abbas.

It is a further sign of tension between the two factions, just ahead of Abbas’ midnight deadline to Hamas to accept a manifesto that implicitly recognises Israel. Prime Minister of the Hamas-led government, Ismail Haniyeh, says plans by the president to hold a referendum on the text, if Hamas fails to agree to it, are illegal. Abbas and western powers have been urging Hamas to soften its stance towards Israel, with foreign donors and Israel banning dealings with the government.
