As hospitals struggle to cope with the casualties, authorities in Indonesia have said the death toll from last week’s earthquake has risen to more than 6,200.

Thousands of injured people are packed into wards and officials say even those in no need of further medical treatment try to stay because of lack of shelter. Six days after the quake, emergency workers are still pulling bodies from the rubble. For tens of thousands of people flimsy tents are the only protection from the elements. The epicentre was the ancient city of Yogyakarta. It is estimated around 130,000 homes were destroyed in the surrounding region. Aid is beginning to get to those in need, but in remote areas where roads have been cut off helicopters are the only means of providing essential supplies. One of the main concerns now is the spread of disease, with so many people living in unhygienic conditions.
