In Italy former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi’s supporters are hoping to make a comeback in local and regional elections today. Attention is focussing on elections in four big cities as well as for the presidency of the Sicily region.

Prime Minister Romano Prodi is hoping voters will endorse the victory his left coalition achieved in the general election last April. Prodi attended a meeting in support of Rita Borsalino who is campaigning for the Sicilian regional government. She is the sister of an anti-mafia judge killed in a bomb attack in 1992. Berlusconi is keeping up the political momentum for the opposition, he spoke in support of Letizia Moratti, candidate for mayor of Turin. Moratti, a former education minister, is an outspoken figure on the right of Italian politics. Italy’s marathon round of voting is not over yet, a second round of the local elections is due in two weeks time.
