The leader of the “no” camp in Montenegro’s independence referendum, Predrag Bulatovic, has been forced to accept defeat. But there was a hint of suspicion among Serbian politicians and in the media as pro-independence Montenegrins hailed their narrow victory.

Aleksander Simic, adviser to the Serbian president Vojislav Kostunica, has been quoted as saying that he would not be surprised if someone filed criminal charges against the pollsters, who revised downwards initial estimates of a 56.3 per cent victory for the “no” camp.

It was a comment indicative of the atmosphere among supporters of continued union with Serbia. The Belgrade daily, Politica, has proclaimed the victory of the pro-independence bloc “questionable”.
