Sombre election anniversary in Iraq

world news

| |

It is a year ago today that Iraq elected its first post war government, but one year on the hoped-for-peace has still not arrived.

In Baqouba just north of Baghdad a curfew has been imposed after two days of street fighting that left 56 people dead. Provincial police forces loyal to the government are struggling to maintain authority in this Sunni stronghold, and fighting erupted after insurgents launched grenade and gun attacks on police checkpoints, a police station and the regional army headquarters. Meanwhile two more policemen were killed in Baghdad on Friday. Analysts say rebels are increasingly spreading the focus of their attacks away from Americantargets and towards local security forces.
