Iran defies UN demands, says IAEA

world news

| |

The UN’s atomic watchdog says Iran has ignored a United Nations Security Council call to suspend all nuclear fuel enrichment.

Mohamad ElBaradei, the head of the IAEA, issued his conclusions on today’s deadline for the Islamic Republic to comply. His report says Iran has done little during a 30-day grace period to answer questions as to whether its nuclear programme is, at is claims, purely civilian. Britain says it will now ask for increased pressure on Tehran by the Security Council, which could eventually impose sanctions. In Washington, US President George W. Bush spoke out after a meeting with his Azeri counterpart. “We obviously talked about Iran and I assured the president of my desire to solve this problem diplomatically and peacefully,” he said. But in Tehran, the tone was defiant. Having already told a rally, Iran didn’t “give a damn” about any eventual UN resolution, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad threatened to totally change his way of co-operating with the IAEA. Iran has vowed to hit US targets worldwide if attacked by Washington, which has not ruled out military options if diplomacy fails to halt what it says is Tehran’s quest for nuclear weapons.
