Mixed line-up in Cannes film festival

world news

“A year of renewal” is how one organiser described the forthcoming Cannes Film Festival, at the unveiling of the line-up today. Unlike last year, in which big name directors featured prominently, lesser-known film-makers are in contention for the top prize.

Next month’s festival will screen films from Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe. But there will be offerings from Cannes regulars like Ken Loach. His “The Wind shakes the barley” will be vying with the latest works of, among others, Pedro Almodovar, for the Palm D’Or.
