Many takers for EU Internet domain suffix

Hundreds of thousands of Europeans have rushed to sign up for .eu (‘dot-EU’) Internet domain suffixes today, the first day for registrations by individuals.

The European Commission said about 300,000 people had applied for .eu in the first hour.

In addition to the European Union domain, each of the 25 member countries has its own domain suffix.

European residents can apply by going to domain registrars listed at the EU organisation EURid.

The EU domain name has been open to businesses and organisations since December, for which 54,000 applications have been approved.

The sorting out process takes some time.

Prices and annual fees will vary.
