Two men and a woman have become the first people charged in connection with Britain’s biggest cash robbery. Police have not commented on media reports that a substantial amount of money was found buried on a farm.

Notes worth 78 million euros, half of them belonging to Britain’s central bank, were taken in last week’s heist at a depot in Kent, southeast England. John Fowler and Stuart Royle stand accused of conspiracy to rob the depot. Fowler is also charged with kidnapping. Kim Shackelton, a 39-year-old woman, was charged with handling stolen goods. Fowler was arrested after police marksmen shot the tyres of the car in which he was travelling. On February 21, a gang posing as police officers seized the depot’s manager and then took his wife and young son hostage, threatening to harm them unless the manager helped them get inside the compound. Several people who were arrested have now been released.
