Prisoners loyal to al-Qaeda have ended an uprising that was carried out simultaneously in three jails in the Jordanian capital. Inmates have released their hostages – they had seized a prison chief and seven police officers during the clashes. The stand-off was resolved after authorities promised the prisoners they would not face punishment. The violence is said to have broken out after two high-profile Islamist prisoners who are on death row were transferred to one of the facilities.

The prisoners’ demands had included the release of a woman accused of trying to blow herself up during the simultaneous bombings of three hotels in Amman last year that killed more than 50 people. The woman, reportedly the wife of one of the suicide bombers, failed to detonate her explosives. Her husband’s worked, the blast ripping through a wedding party claiming dozens of lives.
