French express outrage at murder of Jewish man

world news

| |

Thousands of people have marched in Paris to denounce the killing two weeks ago of a young Jewish man.

It is thought there may have been a racial motive to the abduction and torture of Ilan Halimi, a mobile phone salesman. He was held for three weeks before being dumped naked with horrific injuries. One Jewish community leader said: “This is an expression of disgust felt by people around the country at what happened and a message saying ‘no’ to such violence.” Representatives from France’s main political parties took part. The suspected leader of the gang that kidnapped Halimi has been detained in Ivory Coast and could soon be extradited. He is reported to have told policethat he only wanted money from his victim and that there was no anti-Semitic motive.
