Hopes high for Oscars after Bafta success for “Brokeback Mountain”

“Brokeback Mountain” – the story of love lost and found between two cowboys in mid-West America – was the big star of the night at the British Academy of Film and Television Awards. The unlikely but poignant romance scooped four BAFTAS at the star-studded ceremony in London, including the coveted Best Film award. It was a ringing endorsement for the cast and crew, with next month’s Oscars to look forward to.

Jake Gyllenhaal was chosen as Best Supporting Actor for his role as cowboy Jack Twist.

Reese Witherspoon won the Best Actress category for her portrayal of the wife of Johnny Cash in “Walk the Line”, while the Best Supporting Actress award went to Thandie Newton for her role in the low-budget racial drama “Crash.”

Another winner on the night was “Memoirs of a Geisha”, which came away with three Baftas, for costume design, cinematography and music. Philip Seymour Hoffman went home with the Best Actor BAFTA for his portrayal of the writer Truman Capote in the eponymous film.
