At least one person is reported to have been shot dead and several others injured after clashes between UN peacekeepers and protesters in Haiti. Witnesses say trouble flared at a demonstration over election results near theairport of Port-au-Prince. The UN denies its soldiers shot at the protesters, saying they only fired in the air.

With 90 percent of votes counted after presidenial polls six days ago, former president Rene Preval has fallen further below the 50 percent needed to avoid a run-off ballot. His supporters are alleging foul-play. When early results were announced several days ago, Preval held 60 percent of the vote, comfortably ahead of his closest rival. But by Monday that lead fell to 48.7 percent. Preval, a former ally of ousted president Jean-Bertrand Aristide, is seen by some as a champion of the country’s poor, but viewed with suspicion by the wealthy minority.
