The European Union and the US have condemned the attacks on the Danish and Norwegian embassies in Syria, accusing the authorities of failing to provide protection.

They echoed an appeal from Denmark’s Foreign Affairs minister, Stig Moeller, who said: “The Danish Government urges all leaders, political and religious, to call on their populations to remain calm and to refrain from violence. “We all have a responsibility to make sure that the situation doesn’t escalate, and to contain the violent protests and to return to dialogue,” he said. Danish residents are watching the news closely. “I’m very, very scared of the situation and I’m expecting the worst thing to happen here in Copenhagen,” said one woman. A man said: “I’m a Danish Muslim. When people make mistakes, they must also apologise. We have to respect each other.” Damascus has told Denmark and Norway it regrets the violence against their embassies, agreeing that the attacks were unacceptable.
