A stampede at a stadium in the Phillippines has left more than 80 people dead and nearly 300 others injured. The incident happened as people lined up to get tickets for a popular televsion game show being filmed in Manilla. Most of the victims were elderly women, crushed against a closed steel gate at the bottom of a slope or trampled underfoot. One woman who witnessed the tragedy said the crowd was pushing and that is when they started to fall. “The others couldn’t get out because they were pinned down.” Even after the stampede, thousands of people refused to leave the area because they wanted a chance to win the 20,000 euro jackpot and the special prize of a house and a plot of land.
