Poland’s government has averted a snap general election by clinching a power-sharing deal with two minor parties. The accord ends months of uncertainty after the Conservatives won a parliamentary poll in September but were unable to form a majority administration.

“This means a radical change in our country,” said the head of the governing Law and Justice Party Jaroslaw Kaczynski. His two allies are the populist anti-liberal Samoobrona – or self-defence party – and the ultra-Catholic League of Polish Families. They will not form a coalition with the Conservatives, but will support them on key votes in parliament. In return the government will take their partners’ anti-free market and staunchly nationalist views on board – something that promises to raise eyebrows in Western Europe.
