Germany is denying claims that its spies in Baghdad helped US warplanes choose bombing targets during the invasion of Iraq, even though Berlin opposed the military action there.The government and the country’s foreign intelligence agency have rejected the allegations.

Some media reports are now quoting security sources in Berlin as acknowledging that information was shared between Germany’s foreign intelligence agency and the US. However, they maintain it was only to make sure that places such as embassies, schools and hospitals were not mistakenly targeted. Foreign Minister at the time of the invasion, Joschka Fischer, says he is “not aware of the facts of the case but it is now time to clarify the facts”..The Liberal Free Democrat politician Max Stadler says if the reports are confirmed it would be a “clear violation of the then government’s political position, and it means the public was deceived”.
