London has already done it. Now Stockholm is following suit. Congestion charges have come into effect in the Swedish capital, meaning motorists who enter the city must now be prepared to pay. Most Swedes take pride in their country’s environmentalist credentials but for many this measure is simply a step too far.At a maximum cost of 60 crowns a day, the charge is slightly less than in London.

The measure is part of a political deal to help secure the Green Party’s support for Sweden’s Social Democrat minority government.Congestion charges will initially be imposed on a seven-month-long trial basis. Stockholmers will vote in September on whether to make them permanent.
