Warsaw is not amused. The British ambassador to Poland will soon be summoned to compare his sense of humour with the local version, after an internal email he sent went public — in the Sunday Times newspaper. It quotes a friend calling Charles Crawford “a very funny guy, trying to do his best.”

Polish foreign ministry spokesman Pawel Dobrowolski indicated his bosses did not take kindly to Crawford’s levity. While going on about how to cut short the EU budget fracas, the email said: “Britain’s government have created more jobs for Poles in the past year than the Polish government”.

Crawford goes on, asking ‘where is the gratitude for this? Not a word. So much for solidarity’.
