Poland orders inquiry into CIA prisons claim

world news

| |

Poland’s Prime Minister has ordered an investigation into allegations the CIA runs secret prisons in the country, after repeatedly denying claims made in the US and European media and by Human Rights Watch.

Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz says an inquiry is needed because the reports could threaten Poland’s security. He says he has ordered a probe at all possible locations, to find out if there is any evidence. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice came under pressure over the issue during a recent visit to Europe. She defended the general use of secret flights of terrorist suspects to third countries. On the claims of secret prisons, she tried to reassure Europe’s leaders by saying the US does not authorise or condone the use of torture.
