War crimes suspect awaits transfer to Hague

world news

Croatian war crimes suspect Ante Gotovina is being held by authorities in Spain following his arrest yesterday on the Canary Island of Tenerife.

The fugitive general, one of the three most wanted war crimes suspects from the former Yugoslavia, was transferred to Madrid last night. He stands accused by UN prosecutors of responsibility for atrocities against rebel Serbs in a government offensive in 1995 during the Balkan wars. His arrest is a major boost for UN chief prosecutor Carla Del Ponte. Gotovina, who had been on the run for four years, was arrested at this luxury hotel on Tenerife. He is expected to remain in custody until his transfer to the International War Crimes Tribunal in the Hague.
