A narrow escape for Spain’s oposition leader

world news

Spain’s oposition leader Mariano Rajoy has had a dramatic escape from a helicopter crash in Madrid. Rajoy, leader of the centre-right Popular Party, and the head of Madrid’s regional government, Esperanza Aguirre, emerged from the wreckage shaken but in one piece.

The helicopter had just taken off from the bull ring at Mostoles near Madrid when it plunged five metres to the ground. Emergency staff rushed to the scene to help all those on board, but the only injury reported was a broken finger. The pilot was also unhurt. Esperanza Aguirre was clearly relieved at her narrow escape. She said she was sure that had the accident happened further into the journey and not just at the beginning, she and everyone else on board would probably have been killed. So far the police have not commented on what caused the crash.
