Indonesian authorities have confirmed one of Southeast Asia’s most wanted militants has been killed. Officials say Azahari Husin was one of two suspects either shot dead by security forces during a siege or killed when a fellow militant exploded a bomb in the town of Batu in East Java.

Detectives say they found 30 bombs inside the house where he was hiding. Dubbed, the “demolition man” by newspapers in his native Malaysia, Azahari was the suspected mastermind behind several attacks on Western targets in Indonesia. He was also thought to be the top device-maker in Jemaah Islamiah, a shadowy network linked to al-Qaeda. Authorities say the electronics expert designed and supervised the making of the car bomb which killed 202 people on the holiday island of Bali in 2002.
