Authorities in France have announced the first death believed to be linked to the riots that have shaken the country. A 61-year old man set upon on Friday night in a suburb of Paris has died after spending the weekend in a coma.

Police are reviewing their strategies after violence broke out for the 11th consecutive night in the capital and spread to other centres. Only hours after the French President vowed to defeat the rioters police were shot at and more than 1400 vehicles were torched. Police unions are calling on the government to impose curfews and bring in the army to restore order. At least 10 police officers were hurt in the violence overnight.
