People in Damascus expressed their anger at a UN resolution demanding more cooperation from Syria in the investigation into the killing of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri.

They staged a protest outside the US embassy. The Syrian government says the resolution is unjust and prejudicial. It has rejected UN investigators’ claims that Hariri could not have been killed without approval from Damascus. The resolution, co-sponsored by the US, Britain and France requires Syria to detain anyone deemed a suspect by the UN inquiry. It stopped short of threatening economic sanctions. Syria has called on the Arab league to hold an emergency summit to rally regional support against the resolution. But Arab diplomats said it was unlikely that many of the group’s 22 members would risk harming ties with the US, Britain and France by agreeing to a meeting.
