Poland’s prime minister announces the composition of the country’s new government today, but it will be an apolitical administration dominated by technocrats, as talks to forge a centre-right coalition to run the country have run into the sand.

Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz will lead a minority Law and Justice party government as he has been unable to forge a deal with the Liberal Civic Platform. This has led to a nervous financial market and fears economic reforms will be slowed, although Marcinkiewicz says he is confident further talks will produce a coalition deal. Law and Justice leader Jaroslav Kaczynski on Sunday again turned down a call for him to lead a government himself, made by the Liberal’s leader Donald Tusk. He refuses the job as long as his brother is President. The wrangling has disappointed many observers, and goes against the pre-election assurances by the conservatives and liberals that they would work together. Both groups emerged from the anti-Communist Solidarity movement, but it seems today they have very different views about who should run which ministry, and the direction Poland’s economic policy should take.
