Spain’s Crown Prince Felipe has appeared in an early morning press conference to announce the happy news that he and Princess Letizia have had their first child, a girl.

She has been named Leonora and arrived in a bit of a hurry – by Caesarean Section – as her birth had been predicted for mid-November. She is currently second in line to the throne after her father, although unless the law is changed she will lose this right if she has any brothers. If the current Socialist government succeeds in changing the constitution Leonora could become Spain’s first female head of state since Isabelle II, who died in 1868. Leonora is also King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia’s seventh grandchild.
