Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz has been sworn in as prime minister of Poland at the head of a minority cabinet. It came after his conservative Law and Justice party failed to reach agreement with the liberal Civic Platfrom on forming a coalition. The two sides had been seen as natural allies in a centre-right partnership after last month’s elections.

The new prime minister described his cabinet as a team of “experts and professionals” but many are political novices. The conservatives won the election on a promise to rule together with Civic Platform in a strong government dedicated to accelerating growth and cracking down on corruption. But talks between the two parties collapsed last week due to disagreements over top posts and the scale of economic reforms.

Marcinkiewicz has said he will try again to secure the backing of Civic Platform.
