Poland’s prime minister has formed a minority cabinet after last-minute talks with potential coalition partners failed at the weekend. The new administration will be dominated by technocrats.

Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz will lead the minority Law and Justice Party government after failing to forge a deal with the liberal Civic Platform. This has led to a nervous financial market and fears economic reforms will be slowed. Law and Justice president Jaroslav Kaczynski has again turned down a call from Civic Platform leader Donald Tusk for him to lead a government. He has refused the job while his brother Lech Kaczynski is president. The wrangling has disappointed many observers as the conservatives and liberals had said before the poll that they would work together. The cabinet will be sworn in later today. Both groups emerged from the anti-communist Solidarity movement but it seems they have very different views today about the future of Polish economic policy.
