Doctors and medics worked around the clock treating the wounded in Bali, while hospitals did their best to help people find their loved ones. Emergency flights have been organised for tourists who want to leave, and to transport the wounded back to Australia or Singapore.

The terrorist attacks are another blow to the tourism industry, which is the island’s lifeblood, and which only recently recovered from the 2002 attacks. Security experts say the strikes bear the hallmarks of Jemaah Islamiah, a terrorist network seen as the regional arm of Al Qaeda. Indonesian authorities had been warning for months that fresh bombings were possibly being planned.
