Dozens killed by car bomb in Iraq

A triple car bombing in the Iraqi town of Balad, just north of Baghdad, killed at least 95 people and injured more than a hundred others.

It appears to have part al Qaeda’s campaign against Shi’ite Muslims in Iraq. Shias have been the main target in a rise in violence ahead of next month’s referendum on the constitution. This morning another car bomb exploded in a crowded vegetable market in the southern town of Hilla, killing at least eleven people and wounded 30 others. Hilla has been the scene of the some of the biggest attacks in the insurgency over the past two years. Almost 100 people died in a suicide bomb attack that also detonated a fuel tanker in the town centre in July, and more than 120 were killed in a suicide car bombing at the start of the year.
