Arrest warrant lifted on Tymoshenko

world news

| |

Russia has lifted an arrest warrant on Ukraine’s former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko after she voluntarily turned up for questioning.

Moscow accuses Tymoshenko of trying to bribe its defence ministry officials in the 1990s. The warrant against her was suspended when she became prime minister earlier this year but was reissued when she was sacked a few weeks ago. Tymoshenko was one of the leaders of Ukraine’s so-called “Orange revolution” which ended Russian-backed rule and brought Viktor Yushchenko to power. He fired his former ally this month amid infighting over alleged high-level corruption. Tymoshenko denies any wrongdoing.
