It is an award that some critics feel is long overdue – Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki has been given the Golden Lion lifetime achievement prize by judges at the Venice Film Festival.

His animated films have made him a legend in Japan and other countries but he has never managed to have a blockbuster hit in the US. Animation is widely accepted as an entertainment form for adults in Japan. The 67-year-old has proved time and again he is a master of the medium.
