American director John Turturro had the Venice film festival singing along with his third film “Romance and Cigarettes” on Tuesday.

The film, described as a blue collar musical, stars James Gandolfini from “The Sopranos”, who himself worked in a number of blue collar jobs before becoming an actor. American actress Susan Sarandon plays the wife of a man who still loves her but lusts after his mistress. Britain’s Kate Winslet, best known for her role in “Titanic”, plays the flame-haired mistress Tula. “I always thought that the film is like a sort of a big circus, like life you know, and then the circus becomes smaller as life goes on,” said director John Turturro. Also screening on Tuesday were Abel Ferrara’s “Mary” about an actress obsessed with Mary Magdalene, and Roberto Faenza’s “The Day of Abandonment”, the first major Italian film to be presented.
