The deep divisions in the US over gay marriage have surfaced again after the California legislature became the first state parliament to approve same-sex weddings. The vote by the Demcorat-dominated body presents a dilemma for Republican Governor Arnold Scwharzenegger, who must sign or veto the bill. California voters endorsed a ballot measure in 2000 defining marriage as exclusively between a man and woman.
