Grief and anger as Beslan remembers victims

The people of Beslan have been revisiting their darkest hour. One year on, the grief appeared not to have diminished as survivors and relatives of the victims made their way to the school where the massacre took place.

Half of the 330 people who died in the hostage drama in Russia’s North Ossetia region were children. Some died in the initial onslaught by Chechen militants but most were killed in the rescue attempt on the third day of the stand-off. The terrorists had rigged explosives around the sports hall where the pupils, teachers and parents were being held. It was a painful anniversary for a town that is still struggling to come to terms with what happened, the grief and anger remaining very close to the surface.
