Flood waters are subsiding in central and eastern Europe, and a massive clean-up operation is underway. However, one area in the Austrian Alps – Gargellen – is still cut off. The army is delivering supplies. Several hundred people there – including many tourists – have been evacuated. Romania has paid the highest price of the flooding – 33 people have died, and authorities have warned of the risk of an epidemic in the central Hargitha region.

In Bulgaria 26 people were killed. In total about 70 people have lost their lives across Europe, with Switzerland, Germany, and Austria hit hard. In the southern German state of Bavaria people have been removing the debris. Residents have been gradually returning to their homes in Switzerland as the risk of mudslides weakens. And in Austria, the clean-up is proceeding apace in the provinces of Vorarlberg and Tyrol, where thousands of emergency workers, soldiers and volunteers are in action.
