There were chaotic scenes in the Khan Younis refugee camp in the Gaza Strip when two United Nations employees were rescued by Palestinian police, just minutes after being kidnapped.

The pair, Steven Karl from Switzerland and Christine Blunt from Britain, were apparently pulled from their car by Palestinian gunmen in broad daylight and in front of news cameras. The incident was being seen as another sign of growing lawlessness in Gaza. But within minutes, with gunfire resounding from all sides, and with the cameras still rolling, security forces rescued the pair, bundling them into a police car. The apparent kidnapping came a day after Palestinian security forces arrested a top commander of the militant group, the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades in Khan Younis.
