US to double aid to Africa: Bush

Ahead of next week’s G8 summit, which will be dominated by the issue of world poverty, George Bush has said the US is to double its aid to Africa.

Bush has been coming under pressure from some within the eight-strong group of wealthy nations to increase assistance to Africa. In his address Bush also said he would ask Congress for more money to help African countries combat malaria. The G8 nations as a whole will be coming under pressure to eradicate world poverty when they meet in Scotland the weekend after next. A series of concerts around the globe will coincide with the summit – the Live8 event is expected to attracted tens of thousands of people worldwide. The organisers want the G8 leaders to cancel the debt of poor countries.
