The stuff of dreams for technophiles the world’s biggest tech and telecoms trade show kicks off in Hanover with a mind boggling array of new gadgets on offer. At stake for manufacturers a slice of the 2 trilion dollar technology market.” This trend is expanding” says Germany’s Chancellor Gerhard Schröder. “Last year saw the end of stagnation in the technology industry and this year there’s been growth of more than 3.5. In this trend new jobs will be created, just like last year”
The Swiss top the list of the most technology hungry. They splashed out an average of more 2600 euros last year on information and telecommunications gadgetry. Across the world there seems to be an endless appetite for innovations and a willingness to buy them.
More than half a million visitors are expected at the industry fair. They’ll have 27 hangar-sized halls to wander through. On the way they’ll discover new ways to take photos and mobile phones that do a lot more than just make calls. Dozens of companies are working on devices that will allow free voice calls over the internet – and one more trick to send a shiver down the spines of the phone companies – mobile internet phones.
The only real new innovations this year says one analyst, are the multimedia portable phones. You can watch tv, videos, download music. You can control all of your multimedia functions while you’re on the road.
There are also new satellite navigation systems on show, environmentally fuel cells and face recognition to replace passwords. How did we ever manage without all this?
