The man who Spanish police believe may be the al-Qaeda spokesman who claimed responsibility for the Madrid train bombings in March, 2004 has been arrested. Twenty-eight-year-old Morroccan-born Youssef Belhadj was seized last night in Belgium. A video found near a mosque in the Spanish capital two days after the attacks showed an Arabic-speaking man saying the bombing were revenge for Spain’s decision to send troops to Afghanistan and Iraq. It concluded: “This is a statement by the military spokesman in Europe, Abu Dujan al Afghani.” Spanish investigators think the man referred to is, in fact, Belhadj. More than 190 people died in the train bombings and at least 1,500 more were injured.
