EU tells food industry not to target kids

world news

The European Union has issued a warning to the food industry over adverts used to attract children. The Health and Consumer Affairs Commissioner, Markos Kyprianou, says urgent action is needed to tackle obesity among the young because it is no longer a problem that concerns only America.

Speaking to today’s Financial Times, he points out that self-regulation is the fastest and most effective way to achieve the goal. But he also goes to say that if action is not taken then legislation will follow. Kyprianou also calls on food manufacturers to use clearer labelling to make it “more easily understood by consumers who don’t have PhD’s in chemistry”.
