Indonesia has imposed restrictions on children leaving the country amid fears that some tsunami victims may fall pray to paedophile gangs. Rumours of possible child trafficking are widespread, but officials admit they have little hard evidence. One potential horror story is that of Kristian Walker, a 12-year-old Swedish boy last seen leaving a Thai hospital with an unidentified man.

His grandfather, Daniel, said: “I’m hoping to find him alive as opposed to having been killed initially, because if he’s been kidnapped there’s a possibility that he’s still alive”. The UN’s childrens fund UNICEF says it is also concerned about adults posing as foster parents and whether vulnerable victims of the disaster will be abused or exploited as slaves.
