It looks like any other cabin in the Bosnian Serb mountains but beneath its ordinary facade lies an impressive underground complex that has been home to one of Europe’s top war crimes suspects. EU peacekeepers say fugitive Ratko Mladic recently hid in the bunker, which looks run down but was regularly maintained.

It has its own generators, sophisticated air filtration systems, command, logistics and full communications areas. EU forces describe it as a high-class military installation that is well-designed, well-engineered and well-built. Evacuated from the side of the Veliki Zep mountain near the village of Han Pijesak, the bunker was General Mladic’s headquarters while he was commander of the Bosnian Serb Army in the early nineties. Although its discovery is a coup, EU troops do not appear to be getting any closer to their target. There have been no credible sightings of Mladic for two years. In 1995, the United Nations war crimes tribunal indicted him for genocide along with former Bosnian Serb leader, Radovan Karadzic.
