Afghanistan has a new government

world news

| |

Hamid Karzai elected as President two months ago, swore in his cabinet which includes many reformers who were trained up in the United States.

Ministers gave their oath of office on a copy of the Koran. One highly visible change, unthinkable just a couple of years ago, is the appointment of 3 women to top government posts. Warlords or powerful regional leaders were excluded from office this time around. It is a risky strategy as Karzai tries to extend his power outside the capital. Afghanistan still remains a highly dangerous place. The Taliban are far from finished and the new government will have trouble enforcing its will where tribal leaders are still in charge.
