Key concessions have been made to their cause, but for the opposition in Ukraine the battle goes on. The crowds in the streets of Kiev are looking ahead to the re-run election on December 26 and hoping for a very different outcome to last month’s second round run-off. They say that was when their man, Viktor Yushchenko, was cheated out of the presidency. Ukraine’s top court has ruled the vote was flawed and ordered it be held again.

But, as parliament geared up for a lively session, political turmoil continues during efforts to reach agreement between the warring sides. Monday’s marathon talks involving the main players and international mediators failed to achieve a deal. There were concessions, however, with outgoing president Leonid Kuchma agreeing to two opposition demands – saying he would sack the Central Election Commission and support election law reform.

But there was no accord on a third condition – dismissing the government or any concession by the opposition to support constitutional changes that Kuchma wants to see put in place.
