Rubens extravagnaza opens in Vienna

world news

| |

One of the biggest ever exhibitions of paintings by the Flemish master Peter Paul Rubens opens today in Vienna. It is spread over three museums in the Austrian capital and runs until the end of February.

Visitors can see a wealth of paintings from all Rubens’ artistic periods. The 17th century collections of Archduke Leopold William and Johan Adam Andreas I of Lichtenstein, rivals at the time in buying up Rubens’ works, form the backbone of the joint display. The aim of the exhibition is to highlight the return to Vienna of the reigning Prince of Lichtenstein’s collections, re-uniting the glorious paintings there for the first time since 1938.
