Britain, Spain and Portugal have joined France in evacuating their nationals from Ivory Coast due to escalating violence in the West African country. More than 800 French citizens have fled the country after days of anti-French riots and looting. The trouble flared after nine French peacekeepers were killed in a government strike on a rebel stronghold in the north. In retaliation, France destroyed the Ivorian air force.

Calm is slowly returning to the commercial capital, Abidjan, with some people beginning the clean-up operation after the unrest, but French and Ivorian troops remain on alert.
